Canyons

Sfax means divide land and hence canyon. Rightly So Sfakia listed as the country of canyons. In the prefecture of Chania are about 60 canyons and imposing more and more of these are located in Sfakia. The gorges with rare and unique beauty of flora and fauna, awe in the visitor and a prominent feature of our region across Europe. The canyons 'Tripitis' and 'Sector' is a high degree of difficulty and need experienced driver. The easier for families with children, are those of 'Asfendou', the 'Kallikratis', of 'Imbros' and 'Iligas'. Every valley has its own beauty, so it is not comparable. Samaria.

The 'Faraggas' as we call the Samaria Gorge is the biggest, most impressive and most beautiful gorge in Europe, which since 1962 has been designated a national park since 2001 and is part of the European network Natura 2000. The length reaches 15 km., Width starts at 3.5 and reaches 150m. While the height reaches 500 meters. Striking feature of the gorge are the folds that form rocks. The flora and fauna is extremely rich and consist of unique plant and animal species protected by international agreements with leading the famous Cretan wild goat or goat or Kri-Kri, as well as eagles and other rare species of wild birds. Borer.

Beautiful, rich in flora and fauna (here lives the Cretan wild goat or ibex) and one of the more 'difficult' canyons of western Crete. The most wild and rugged canyon. Required experienced driver and two days time. Even three hours east to reach Agia Roumeli.

Eligia.

Interesting but very difficult gorge and needs experienced driver. It starts from the shelter Kallergis and after 5 hours of hiking, we reach the place River. From there the descent becomes a Rechtra (vertical cliff waterfall) with the help of ropes and after walking for 3.30 hours, resulting in the beautiful woods of Seloudas the lovely beach of St. Paul. But you can read the last part of the gorge of St. John hiking 1.30 hours to the fountain - Kormokopo cave. From there we descend the canyon, walking a total of two hours to get out again on the coast of St. Paul, where Agia Roumeli is another hour.

Aradaina.

Very beautiful and interesting canyon. Its length is 7 km long and need 3.5 to 4 hours to cross the river. His entry begins from the village Aradena beside the iron bridge of 138m. where enthusiasts elastic rope (bungee jumping) will enjoy their jumps in a vacuum. The gorge ends at beautiful beach 'Dialiskari' or 'Marble', where you can enjoy swimming and pinch the adjacent canteen. From there you can go by boat to Loutro Sfakia and then continue east the path to cures in approximately 2 hours and another 2 to Sfakia.
